Diseases Caused by Vitamin D Deficiency

Rheumatoid Arthritis

According to a Canadian study, there is a strong connection between low levels of vitamin D and rheumatoid arthritis. It was found that the participants who had the lowest plasma levels were more prone to a disease related to RA, i.e. 5 times more than the others.


Although the main reason for asthma is not yet discovered, according to some studies, vitamin D deficiency contributes to its occurrence. When a person has enough levels of vitamin D, the intensity of the asthma symptoms are much lower. According to a study from 2011, vitamin D deficiency worsened the symptoms of metabolic syndrome in HIV patients. Scientists also found that people lowered the risk of diabetes type II by having healthy vitamin D levels either through regular exposure to sunlight or adequate supplementation.

Dental cavities

Numerous studies have shown that when the levels of vitamin D are adequate, the teeth are healthily calcified. On the other hand, when the levels of vitamin D are low, the risk of dental cavities is much higher.


Different studies have discovered that when the levels of vitamin D are ideal, the body can fight off the flu much better.

High blood pressure

A study published in the Journal of Investigative Medicine found that people who suffer from high blood pressure have a better chance of dealing with the condition if their vitamin D levels are high.


Some studies, done in the USA and Europe, indicate that there is a strong link between low levels of vitamin ND and ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, and other forms of IBS. Moreover, it was also found that people who live in areas with little exposure to sun have a higher risk of IBD.


Unfortunately, low levels of vitamin D increase the risk of all types of cancer whereas those who have higher levels have a much smaller risk of developing some cancer.
