In the ancient Mayan culture, Avocados are known to be the fruit of the gods. Maybe it’s because of their smooth, velvet like texture.Or maybe it’s because of their endless health benefits. Whatever it is, there is no doubt that these green power houses have the ability to extend your life.
Known Benefits Of Avocados
It’s no secret that avocados are a nutrient dense super food. Their health benefits range from essential vitamins such as: Vitamin B5, B6, K, C, and A; too powerful minerals such as magnesium. They also contain more potassium than a banana and have loads of other minerals such as: iron, zinc, calcium and copper.
These delicious green, pear shaped, alligator skinned fruits mask these health benefits with a unique taste and butter like texture that make it almost impossible to tell just how healthy they actually are for you. Avocados health benefits don’t stop at vitamins and minerals. New research suggests that avocados might also help to fight cancer.
Avocados And Cancer.
Unfortunately, there are many different types of cancer out there. Cancer is one of the few diseases that can affect almost any function of the body and spread rapidly. Although significant headway has been made in the medical community there is still no definite cure for cancer.
However, for the specific type of cancer known as leukemia new research surrounding avocados has brought us closer than ever to a cure. Recently, a property found in avocados has demonstrated the ability to combat the free radical cells that compose the blood cancer known as AML. This property is known asAvocatin B.
What Is Avocatin B.
Avocatin B is a recently discovered vitamin compound named and founded by university of waterloo researcher, Professor Paul Spagnuolo. So far avocatin B has only been found in the avocado fruit, making this fruit more unique then it was previously thought to be.
According to Spagnuolo, Avocatin B combats specific stem cells found in the cancer known as Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
Spagnuolo states “The stem cell is largely responsible for the disease developing and it’s the reason why so many patients with leukemia relapse. We’ve performed many rounds of testing to determine how this new drug works at a molecular level and confirmed that it targets stem cells selectively, leaving healthy cells unharmed.”
Avocatin B has the potential to be an effective treatment for leukemia. However, at this time Avocatin B is still not a compound that is approved for use in oncology clinics.
hat being said, Spagnuolo is already performing experiments to prepare the avocatin B for the first step of clinical trial. This is the first round of trials where people diagnosed with AML could have access to the new treatment.
Avocados may or may not be the fruit of the god’s. However, there is no doubt avocatin B is just one more reason avocadoes should be a favorite food of the heath continues individual.
